Thanks Cherry! Imagery is definitely one of the harder concepts on the list. If you feel like you’ve hit a wall, though, the best idea is usually just past it! Try taking a break and doing something else – you never know what great idea will come to you when you separate yourself from writing for a bit. I frequently have my best ideas while doing something completely unrelated to writing!

Thanks Harman 🙂

I totally agree about the perspective thing. I didn’t include it because it’s such a minefield it deserves its own post. Perhaps it’s time to write about it…

I rely on a couple of techniques from above, and those are: Imagery and simply language, and yet the imagery part can become stressful sometimes, when I write, I don’t always reach the perfect imagined part of the scene I want. And I never quite guessed I used Analogy in my writing, let alone I didn’t know that name until now! 😀 but great post, it definitely ‘opened’ my eyes.

I’ve long been a proponent of using literary tools and sensibilities in all kinds of writing, including non-fiction.

The one thing I may want to add to your list is a matter of focus and perspective: I often see people writing what *they* want to say, not what their *readers* need to hear. In the end, it doesn’t matter if you’re writing an email, a novel, a white paper, a report or something else… In the very act of sharing your writing, you’re making a claim: This text, dear reader, is worth a few minutes of your attention. Or more. So reward them for giving you that attention by giving something back in your words.

Thanks again and keep up the good work, Kristina!
