This is my second year doing NaNoWrimo, and honestly it’s the most fun I have all year. I pick a fun topic that I want to explore as a novel and then go for it. I am not planning to publish my NaNoWrimo novel (although I’ll email it to anyone who shows even the slightest interest) and I find it’s a great time to write every day and have fun. One day I might publish a novel but until then – doing this annual challenge has taught me soooo much about writing. My main takeaway – definitely have a plan. And also – it won’t go according to the plan, and it will be exactly as it should. 😃

I referenced it in my blog on NaNoWriMo – https://thevicmikpov.com/2019/11/10/thoughts-on-nanowrimo/. Thanks for the thinking points!

Sounds like you have a fantastic mindset and are approaching this in exactly the right way. There is a lot to be said for thorough planning, so I think you are doing the right thing taking the extra time. It will make the words flow much easier. Sometimes tangents happen! I would say worry about just telling the story. Tangents are allowed in first drafts.

I think it was Stephen King in ‘On Writing’ who said something along the lines of “the first draft is you telling yourself the story. The following drafts are you editing it so it tells the reader the story.” (Please be assured that he was much more eloquent, but I hope you get my meaning.) I found this outlook very freeing when it came to getting the words out onto the page.

I am attempting another year although with lowered expectations (cue the music). I’m just learning Scrivener 3 and I write historical blogs on top of owning a tour company, so time is not on my side. I am taking the Sept-Nov to tighten up my research, work on characters, and getting my wonky timeline figured out. I am keeping my expectations reasonable and achieveable. For me writing is the easy part, making my writing have a purpose and not go off on historical tangents, now that’s the hard part!
