Thank you for the comparisons! It’s funny how we all see things differently though – I find Scrivener’s interface infinitely more beautiful and appealing than Novlr 😀

I don’t delete ANYTHING. I stopped it from backing up daily, but I still backed up regularly. I also moved it so that my back ups were on a physical drive while my actual Scrivener files were in Dropbox (so that I can access it on iOS as well). My hard drives are way bigger than my Dropbox, so that way I still had it stored in multiple places without using up space as quickly.

Hey Sonia, yep you can export it to ebook and print. You can’t save it on all three at the same time, but saving it in multiple ideas is a great idea to make sure you have a backup! As far as I’m aware you don’t need to buy a new licence, but I can’t say for certain. Hope that helps 🙂

I loved your post. I just started searching for a software to write my first book and I heard about Scrivener. As I can see from your post, I’ll be able to export it to and ebook and also for a print version, right? I also will be able to save my work on my computer, a hard drive and Dropbox at the same time? Or I can save it only in one place? If I want to use Scrivener in two different computers, do I have to pay twice or only once? Thanks in advance for your help.

You can do that with Scrivener if you sync it with Dropbox and have it installed on each device. With Novlr, once you’ve logged into the browser it works online and offline, but unlike Scrivener doesn’t work on mobile (last I checked).

I want to write with the desktop, then go out for coffee and keep writing with the laptop. Can’t do that easily with Scrivener. How does Novelr work in that regard?

Use headers. Then, you can navigate to any scene/chapter/part you want. I think I’ll keep Word. Scrivener has bells and whistles…but I don’t need them. Wrote two books in Word, easy to format, and my editor didn’t gripe that I sent him a hot mess of an exported work to a .doc format (mangling it in the process).

Hi Stephen, I’ve heard many similar complaints from Windows users. Literature and Latte are working on Scrivener 3 for Windows, but I haven’t heard any updates recently. The last I heard it was due out at the start of this year, so in theory, there should be more information soon!

Building software for Windows is very different to building software for Macs. Since Macs were going for the creative market when Scrivener first came out, it made sense for them to go for that market, too. Things have changed, but Scrivener is still a small team so building what’s basically a whole new version of the software takes time! If their bigger audience is on Mac, it also makes more sense for them to keep that software more updated. Frustrating for Windows users, but from a business perspective, it makes sense.

They did post something about Scrivener 3 for Windows when they first announced the Mac version on their blog. It also mentions a beta version of Scrivener 3 for Windows which should be out now if you’re interested 🙂

When Scrivener 3 for Windows does eventually come out, I’m hoping to do a review and comparison, so stay tuned!
