Instead they have wound up with everything in it, but nobody can use it.

I’ve just spent over a week trying to get a novel compiled into something remotely usable – without success. I finally got something out of it that at least I could edit in Word, but with more problems than I could imagine. Problems included: miscellaneous extra blank pages,
random insertions of titles of text pages,
strange font changes,
ignoring line lengths.

I think I will compile manually using copy-paste into Word. Their concept of the Binder allowing the writing of small segments is great. But sooner or later you want it all together.

My job is writing books, not playing with software, and I need to get a book in the mail not sit here and try to understand what they are trying to tell me,

It’s not just you, Nita – the compile function is SUPER confusing. Potentially more confusing than the compile function from Scrivener 2, which wasn’t user-friendly itself. It took me weeks to figure out how to do it on Scrivener 3 and I lost many weekends to it (no hyperbole necessary). I’ll be putting together a post on how to use it soon. Hopefully that will shed some light on it for you 🙂

The compile function is confusing probably because I am not a tech person. Been trying to get chapter titles to appear, to no avail. Searched for a solution for hours. Given up now and concentrating on writing. Maybe one day I will figure it out!

Also I don’t want it dictating to me where to save my files. It is unnecessary.
I’ve gone back to using scrivener 2.

I actually find Vellum more confusing than Scrivener’s new compile interface, but it’s a personal preference thing. Being able to label each section individually is really useful for me, and not being able to do that was one of my big gripes with Scrivener 2. If you can do that in Vellum I’ve yet to find it. I haven’t put together a box set using Scrivener yet, although that’s something I do have planned for 2018, so it will be interesting to see what it’s like.

Writing is definitely Scrivener’s strong point/main focus, and I think because of that they’ll always fall a little short of their competitors when it comes to compiling.
