I know this article is 2 years old, but having just now found it, first, I would like to say thank you for the explanation. Second, I have begun writing more and more over the past year. Based on your definition of Free Verse Poetry, I believe this is the best way to categorize my current style of writing. But I do have some questions. First of all, is there a traditional length to such poetry? I ask because mine tend to be between 87 and 174 lines. Not all of these lines are the same length (e.g. some lines are just 1 word, some lines are up to 10 words). My other question is in regards to sharing what I’ve written. What is the best platform to do so? I am currently using Reddit, but I didn’t know if there was a better place to post what I’ve written/will write. Any help or feedback would be appreciated. Thank you Again.

(Also, I don’t know if it’s appropriate to do so, but to give an example of my writing, I have attached a link to my latest post on Reddit. There is nothing untoward in what I’ve written, but if this is an inappropriate way to share such writing, my apologies.)

Jason

I’m signed up to the 12 poems in 12 months challenge, and so far everything has rhymed – except the haiku. Even the prompt ‘blank’ produced a rhyming verse, but I’m going for it for the next prompt of ‘Freedom’. Thanks for your help.

I am so glad you enjoyed this post. It makes me so happy to think I may have inspired someone to write some more poetry 🙂

You’re right – we all need a break sometimes. Free verse is perfect for that!

Enjoy 🙂

I’ve wanted to try writing free verse but was never really sure how to tackle it. Some times it can be a nice break from fiction or to work with fiction.

Your post gave me some of the best clarity on this and how to get started. Thank you.

Liz
