As someone who has and lives with people who have OCD, I feel like most works including it are often focusing on a singular aspect of it rather than the whole thing.

Along those lines I needed to figure out the grammatically correct way to write that I have Bipolar I as the “one” looks like an” I ” and I do not want to confuse my readers if they are unaware that there are different types of Bipolar. Didn’t tackle that question here, but was enlightened some. I would have to say that I also have Bipolar, but do not take that on as my identity as some would. Not that I am ashamed exactly, but it is an illness so, as it is a part of my life, it is not who I am. It is encouraging to hear another commenter say I am Bipolar. Owning this as part of them and I respect that. The way I own my illness is how I manage it. I just always choose to say that I have Bipolar. To each his/her own. Thanks for the article!

On the whole I agree with the writer, with one major exception. I have been bipolar all my adult life (now over 30y), reasonably stabilised on medication but still prone to major mood swings. I am proud to say that I am bipolar – it does define me – positively for the most part. I could not have achieved many of the things that I have had I not been bipolar. I don’t view it as an illness like rheumatoid arthritis (for example) – it is an integral part of my personality, of what makes me me.
