A Hogwarts Express ticket[3] was a ticket provided to all who were attending Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry for the first time. It provided important details, such as the date and time that the Hogwarts Express departed from King's Cross Station: 1 September at 11 A.M.[2] It was also a general ticket used for travelling on the Hogwarts Express.[4]
History[]

A Hogwarts Express ticket
When Albus Dumbledore visited Tom Riddle at Wool's Orphanage as his special messenger, he provided him with an envelope that included, amongst other things, his Hogwarts Express ticket.[5]
When Ben Copper was planning on heading home to London during the Christmas holidays, he purchased a train ticket for the Hogwarts Express however he managed to lose it. Desperately, he searched for it with the help of Jacob's sibling and Penny Haywood but they couldn't find it. Secretly, Albus Dumbledore sent him an owl with a replacement ticket, however Ben didn't know who sent it and chalked it up to a Christmas miracle.[4]
Rubeus Hagrid provided Harry Potter with one of these just before Harry caught the train that would take him back to the Dursleys.[2] Later, when Harry explained to Vernon Dursley that he needed to get to Platform Nine and Three-Quarters and Vernon replied that there was no such thing, Harry stated that it was on his ticket.[2]
Behind the scenes[]
- It is uncertain whether students in years other than the first year are provided with this ticket, since the details of where and when the Hogwarts Express departs never change, barring very special circumstances. It is also unknown if the ticket serves anything other than an informational purpose, though no mention is made of Harry having to surrender it. Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, however, does make reference to a "ticket inspector" who signalled Harry, Ron and Hermione when it was safe to walk through the magical barrier between Platform Nine and Platform Ten,[6] and LEGO Harry Potter: Years 5-7 depicts Harry, Ron, and Hermione as needing a ticket to board the Hogwarts Express at the start of the fifth year, though subsequent trips do not require it.
