- 14 January: Alan Rickman, the actor who portrayed Severus Snape in the film adaptions, died from cancer.
- 27 April: Wolfgang Hess, the German voice of Albus Dumbledore in the Harry Potter films from the film adaptation of Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix to Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2, died aged 78.
- 23 June: The United Kingdom voted in a referendum to leave the European Union, with Vernon Dursley most likely voting in favour of leaving.[2]
- 31 July: Harry Potter and the Cursed Child (Special Rehearsal Edition) was released in bookstores in script form, breaking sales records.
- 8 September: Hazel Douglas, who played Bathilda Bagshot in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1, died aged 92
- 21 September: Terence Bayler, who played The Bloody Baron in Harry Potter and the Philosophers Stone, died aged 86
- 14 October: J. K. Rowling announces that there will be five films in the Fantastic Beasts series.[3][4][5]
